Begin with your goal

If you smoke, vape or use both, explain your current pattern and what you want help with. A conversation about nicotine dependence should include your previous attempts to quit and any concerns about treatment. You do not need to arrive having chosen a product. Start by asking which support options are appropriate for your circumstances.

Ask about the range of options

Ask a doctor or pharmacist to explain the available approaches, their risks and the role of follow-up support. Vaping is not risk-free. Avoid assuming that a product promoted online is suitable for you or that another person’s experience predicts your result. Ask what the evidence means for the decision you are considering.

Use current Australian information

Australian access requirements have changed over time. The TGA patient information page is a better starting point than an old news story or a seller’s social media post. Check the current guidance and ask a pharmacist about the requirements that apply to your circumstances. This article does not replace that individual discussion.

Agree on follow-up

Before the conversation ends, ask how you will review progress toward your goal and what to do if the plan is not working for you. Keep a record of the questions you still have. The focus should remain on support for quitting and managing dependence, with a clear next step you understand.
